snow business

Snow day!
Actually, it’s more like a power outrage day
We had a wee snow storm last night that left Macaroni’s school in a black out
So they cancelled school for the day
Trying to send Magoo to her school (that doesn’t have a power outrage) when Macaroni had the day off?
My will is not that strong
So both kids are home
And there’s snow ev-ah-ree-where

As I stumbled downstairs this morning to make lunches, the phone was ringing
It was the call about Macaroni’s school being closed
It took me a millisecond to decide that Magoo could stay home too
And the happy dancing began
Me, because bonus time in my PJs is never a bad thing
And the girls because no school = friends coming over = THE BEST DAY EVAAAHHHH MUM!!!

We’re all currently in my office and Ipadded, Imacced, or Iphoned up
Steve Jobs would be proud
(I’ll post a pic of my office one day when it’s not so messy….so probably never)

I had to remind Magoo to use her foot spray before she entered
Before her, I thought the only people who had feet that smelt like curdled goat’s cheese were me and my Dad
Turns out you can pass down cool traits like that to your eight year old
So, part of my morning ritual of telling her to ‘brush your teeth’ and ‘eat your breakfast’ now includes …‘spray yo feet child!’

Quite like sitting around the dinner table with your kids at night
Sitting around my desk is often the place where we have serious family discussions
The kind that just happen organically.
Ha, I just used the wanky term ‘organically’. I hate myself right now
If you have kids, you know how it is when you ask them anything
How was your day?
Much homework?
Was your lunch OK?
At least that’s how it feels sometimes around here

So actual conversations with humans I birthed is always welcome

This morning’s…

Macaroni: What’s a douche?
Me: An idiot
Macaroni: Can I call someone that or is it a really bad word?
Me: Best to use that one under your breath, just in case
Magoo: I like it. Douche, douche….. DOUCHE!

Then Diamond walked in
Why are you yelling douche?

Me: Because the girls wanted to know what it meant
Diamond: What did you tell them?
Me: That it meant idiot
Diamond: What about the other definition?
Me: Huh?
Diamond: The flushing thing?

I gave Diamond the look
The one that says, really? REALLY?? You want to have a conversation about vajay-jay cleaning with your girls right now because that’s what you’ve just started buddy
It should be noted that he also wouldn’t let (a very pregnant) me get away with telling a then 2 year old Macaroni that her sister was going to come out of my belly button. I had to tell her the truth. She cried and ran around holding her crotch for the rest of the day.
Sometimes excluding all the facts is good
And it’s not the same as lying
It’s called parenting.

Macaroni: What’s the douche that’s a flushing thing Dad?
Diamond: (suddenly all uncomfortable and without the ability to make eye contact) It’s a toilet kinda thing that mainly ladies use to wash their…ahh…private parts
Macaroni: Why?
Diamond: Because they want to
Macaroni: WHY?
Diamond: Like for hygiene I guess, so it doesn’t smell

passing it on down

Remember when I rattled off a list at the beginning of the year of stuff I wanted to do and try?

Well last night I got to do ONE of them

And I’m not sure I even have the words to tell you how excited I have been in the lead up to this

I always found it weird that people would cry when they heard a favorite songs, or met someone they admired

I mean, I’m an excitable girl, who CRIES…..but just not over that stuff….well, unless it’s George

Apparently you can now add Cyndi Lauper to that list

From the moment Cyndi Lauper stepped out on stage, I was fighting back tears
Happy tears, but the wet kind none-the-less
She performed her complete “She’s So Unusual” album, from start to finish
And I was instantly a kid again, back in my bedroom, playing that record as loud as my little stereo would crank it, dancing on my bed, singing into my hairbrush

She is 60 now…I know…what the??
She dances exactly the same
She SOUNDS exactly the same
Note for note, Cyndi Lauper’s voice is fucking phenomenal
And it hasn’t changed, seriously, it has not

She blew me away
Just like she did when I saw her live so many years ago
For me, she is everything an artist should be
She’s a musician who connects to her audience, she entertains, she’s funny, and she can sing the shit out of whatever comes out of her mouth
After hearing her explain how each of the songs on that album came to be written, you can also add brilliant storyteller to her list of fabooshness

Didn’t think it was possible, but I adore her MORE after lasts night’s show

She made the kid in me SMILE sooooo bigIMG_8865

And the Mum in me so stoked I got to share this with my girlIMG_0742

And as I sit here listening to the Cyndi Lauper music coming from Macaroni’s bedroom, I know the next generation of Cyndi fans are growing up with her music as their soundtrack, as they bounce on their beds

And I know where my hairbrush is

macaroni’s milestone

She’s already smarter than me

She loves playing the cello and having sleepovers

Her favourite time of the year is right now, because d’uh…Halloween!

Her crazy long legs have brought her up to just about eye level with me

She’s the cool kid her little sister wants to be

She loves surprises, scary movies, Lancelin and Rainbow Loom bracelets

All she wanted for her birthday was a skateboard and a little brother

One out of 2 ain’t bad

She’s thoughtful, funny and the most prolific reader I’ve ever known, and and always has at least 3 books on the go. Her favourite this week is Little Women, which she wants me to read too….but hello? Have you seen the SIZE of that book?

What I DO love to read, is anything Macaroni writes….she can write the shit out of a good story

She loves Thin Lizzie, Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones and old Elton John

She’s a thinker, she’s a giggler, she’s a great friend

Whatever ‘it’ is, this kid oozes it.

And as far as daughters go…
We’re pretty lucky to call her ours

Happy Double digits Macaroni

grandkids 8

You’ve given us an incredible 10 years so far, and being your Mum is truly, the best thing that ever happened to me

And for that, I might even “UNbreak” iTunes for ya today 😉
